Ocean Spray and Love in the Air

Bhavya and Cassie live in Arizona and decided they wanted to spend this Labor Day weekend in San Diego, CA. They both knew this was going to be a special trip, but only Bhavya knew just how special! He contacted Will You Marry Me Photography with his idea and we were so excited that we just had to be a part of it!

Bhavya had a big question to ask Cassie. Possibly the biggest question ever.

They met online two years back and decided to meet in San Diego. They took a ferry ride to Coronado from Downtown San Diego and in our consultations it struck us all as the perfect spot. Bhavya recalled how they were so occupied in conversation with each other, they didn’t even realize the ferry had already reached its destination and docked in Coronado, while other passengers started coming aboard! Obviously, they hit it off.  They eagerly began a long distance relationship which blossomed for over a year and a half. Bhavya was living in San Jose, CA and Cassie was getting her nursing degree in Victoria, Texas but they didn’t have the opportunity to finally be together until they moved to Arizona.  They have been living there together since then.

Knowing the significance of the ferry ride, my husband and I set out to make the moment memorable and special. Research time!

Two weeks prior to Bhavya popping the question, my husband and I took the Flagship Cruise Ferry from Downtown San Diego to Coronado at 6:55 PMa which coincided closely with sunset.  The ferry departs from behind the San Diego Convention Center, and right next to Joe’s Crab Shack (don’t ask), so we had to make sure parking and other variables were accounted for. We introduced ourselves to the boat captain that would be working on September 3, 2016 and got contact info for the Public Information officer.  We let her know of Bhavya’s plan—he would be proposing on the top floor of the Ferry Boat, which is open to the air and allows for sweeping backdrops of the San Diego skyline and the Coronado Bridge. Ocean spray, and love, were in the air.

After the exploratory Ferry ride we emailed Bhavya photos we took and suggested the best location to propose at the top of the Ferry in terms of lighting, picturesque composition, and crowd control.

The day had finally come. My husband and I arrived early to make sure we had everything accounted for. Surprise! There was actually an outdoor concert (Bayside Summer Nights) and several activities going on at the Embarcadero Marina Park, so, we had to switch to Plan B for parking! Never a dull moment when you are photographing out in the wild, folks!

The lovely couple waited on the pier off to the side of the Ferryboat, talking and enjoying the perfect San Diego coastal weather.  My husband and I waited by the gate passing cards out to the guest that read, ”SHHH!  There will be a surprise proposal on the 6:55 Ferry.”  We were able to hand out cards to the majority of the guests, and most of them got in on the fun and stayed below to make it easier to capture all the magic above. We were all conspirators of love, and that bonds people!

The Flagship Cruise Ferry departed Downtown San Diego a little after 6:55.  Bhavya pulled out his phone and stood up, and had Cassie do the same under the auspices of taking a photo with the great backdrop of San Diego at sunset.

Then Bhavya knelt down on one knee and looked at Cassie, and held up a small, black hinged box with the top open and a sparkle inside. She smiled, and tears of joy filled up her eyes, and she said YES!! We all heard a few sniffles from the crowd and a spontaneous burst of clapping and laughter. What a moment!

Congratulations Bhavya and Cassie.  Thank you for making us apart of capturing your special day--we will never ride the ferry without thinking of you both!
